CRASH....
Two papers are over yeay!! And still 3 more to go…Anyway, I won’t be talking bout exam because that would mean I have to stop writing this and get back to studying…which I would, later =P….
Last night, after rrr 2 hours of studying, I decided to give myself a break, which I didn’t deserve of course since I’d given myself a break the whole day practically haha…But I DID study SERIOUSLY for that 2 hours though *desperate justification*
So I went to my friend’s room to watch this movie called ‘CRASH’. There’re lots of famous actors in that movie like Sandra Bullock, Brendan Fraser, this guy who starred in Hotel Rwanda I dunno his name, this pretty actress who starred in MI-2 I dunno her name either, Ryan Phillipe and just google it for yourself will ya hehe…
Here’s a synopsis of the movie taken from http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/movies.php?id=1248
A provocative, unflinching look at the complexities of racial conflict in America, CRASH is that rare cinematic event - a film that challenges audiences to question their own prejudices. Diving headlong into the diverse melting pot of post-9/11 Los Angeles, this compelling urban drama tracks the volatile intersections of a multi-ethnic cast, examining fear and bigotry from multiple perspectives as characters careen in and out of one another’s lives. No one is safe in the battle zones of racial strife. And no one is immune to the simmering rage that sparks violence - and changes lives...
The plot is intriguing though might be boring especially if you’re not particularly interested in racial discrimination, prejudices, SARA *what does SARA stand for btw melon farmer?* kind of stories. Of course I had a great time watching this since this topic is one of my subjects of interest, just as I like “Save the Last Dance”, “Hotel Rwanda”, not documentary about 1998 May Riot though -.-‘.
I always feel strongly about the issue of prejudice and discrimination probably because I grew up as a minority and have tasted the bitterness of discrimination. The sad thing about being an ‘immigrant’ is that sometimes you don’t know where you belong. Worse if you are like me or my fellow “race”...born as Indonesian-Chinese…can’t say I’m really a Chinese coz I’ve never been to china, neither do I speak Chinese...but not really an Indonesian either perhaps, since we’re not so called native, though I feel very much an Indonesian of course. I remember growing up innocent, not really realizing the racial differences…being always in the safe and comfort zone of going to private schools where most of them are Chinese…didn’t have the slightest clue about discrimination. Then one day in high school while going for a 10-day field trip, I met a stranger who uttered some words of ‘racial insults’ which disturbed me for a while then. Then the ultimate eye-opener, the 1998 riot which has a deep impact on me till this very moment.
I’m not going to write further since it’s time to get back studying uuurrggghhh…..just leaving a thought for you….and my point is, watch the movie…it’s good really *better than those Korean drama Sa hehehe…*. Ooo still remember one dramatic scene where I couldn’t help breaking into tears…Lastly, some interesting quotes from conversations I encountered in Ireland:
Stranger: So where exactly are u from?
Me : *thinking…Indonesia, Singapore, Indonesia, Singapore?* Singapore….but I’m actually Indonesian =P
French guy: I thought Singapore is in Indonesia
A friend: Indonesia??? Is it India????
Me: LOL
Tanzanian guy: Indonesia? I’ll look it up on the internet where that is.
An aeronautical engineering student: Singapore? Have u seen the airbus A380?
Me: $%*&(*)*_ rrr I don’t know much about plane =P
*FYI, Airbus A380 is one of the most technologically advanced aircraft and Singapore Airlines will be the first airline in the world to introduce the A380 into commercial service in 2006. I found that later from a friend*
Some Chinese guy on the street: Excuse me, are you a Chinese?
Me: rrrr No, I’m not.
Chinese guy : Where are you from?
Me: Indonesia
Chinese guy: Are you looking for a boy?
Me: What???
Chinese guy: Do you want to go out tonight?
Me: @#$%^&&* siao!!! (I didn’t say that. I politely declined and run away :s)

last 2 lines.. you should have said... I'm looking for a man not a boy hahahahha
Hahaha... You've forgotten what SARA stands for, Cioppino? It stands for Suku, Agama, Ras, Antar golongan (ethnic group, religion, race, intergroup). Now, I bet you don't know what NAPZA stands for, do you? =P
BTW, it's the movie that won the best picture award at the 78th Academy Awards, isn't it?
Hummm... It sounds from your description that you had a traumatic experience with the situation in Indonesia. Hope you still have a little bit of confidence that our home country is not always that bad :)
Why don't you go out with him??? I mean if he's cute, why not? Hahaha.
Those angmohs ah...they probably only know China and Japan as Asian countries..and Pakistan maybe. Or they probably think Pakistan is a continent to itself. *rolls eyes*
